Web3 in 2022: Blockchain and the Enterprise Reality Check

Web3 reached peak enterprise attention in 2022 with a promise to replace platform-centered trust with decentralized networks, programmable assets, and user-controlled identity. The year also clarified where blockchain created distinctive value and where an ordinary database remained the better answer.

Shared records required shared governance

The strongest enterprise cases involved multiple organizations that needed a common transaction history but did not want one participant to control it entirely. Trade documentation, asset provenance, settlement, and consortium workflows fit the pattern better than internal applications already governed by one company.

Distributed technology did not remove governance. Participants still needed rules for membership, upgrades, data standards, dispute resolution, privacy, key recovery, legal accountability, and what happened when on-chain logic conflicted with an off-chain event.

Tokenization exposed operating questions

Representing rights or assets as tokens could improve transferability and automation, but value depended on the legal and operational connection between the token and the thing it represented. Custody, identity, regulation, valuation, and integration with existing records remained decisive.

Public-chain approaches added transparency and composability while creating concerns around transaction costs, privacy, irreversible mistakes, and changing regulation. Permissioned networks offered more control but could weaken the decentralization argument.

The practical Web3 test

An enterprise should ask whether independent parties truly need a shared state, whether intermediaries create material friction, and whether governance can be agreed before selecting a blockchain. If a trusted operator already exists and performance, privacy, or reversibility dominate, conventional architecture is usually simpler.

The durable contribution of Web3 is not that every application becomes decentralized. It is the renewed focus on digital ownership, verifiable records, programmable exchange, and the design of trust across organizational boundaries.
