The Enterprise History of Web 2.0: Participation, APIs, and Platform Business

Web 2.0 changed the web from a collection of destinations into a network of participation and programmable services. For enterprises, the era introduced richer applications, user-generated information, social distribution, APIs, and business models improved by continuous use.

Participation created new data

Users no longer only read pages. They created profiles, reviews, tags, posts, media, and connections. Inside organizations, collaborative tools captured knowledge that previously remained in email and meetings. Outside them, customers influenced product reputation and expected direct conversation.

This participation created operational obligations. Enterprises needed moderation, identity, privacy, records policy, community management, and a way to learn from feedback without treating every signal as representative.

APIs turned capabilities into building blocks

Web services and APIs allowed applications to exchange data and exposed business capabilities beyond a single interface. Partners could integrate, mobile applications could reuse services, and companies could build ecosystems around platforms.

The API economy also made interface stability, authentication, documentation, rate controls, monitoring, and lifecycle management strategic concerns. A public API was a product contract, not merely a technical endpoint.

Continuous service replaced periodic publishing

Web 2.0 companies improved products through observed use and frequent releases. Enterprises began adopting similar feedback loops, laying groundwork for product management, analytics, cloud delivery, and DevOps.

The lasting contribution of Web 2.0 is the expectation that software is participatory, connected, measurable, and continuously improving. Modern AI systems add a generative interface, but they still depend on the identities, APIs, data, and feedback mechanisms this era normalized.
